Langelandsfortet is one of Denmark's first Cold War museums, and constitutes a unique and thought-provoking part of not only Langeland, but all of Denmark's national history before, during, and after the war. Here, children as well as adults can have a fun, educational, and fascinating day.
The fort was built by the Navy in the early 1950s, and consisted of 14 different underground concrete bunkers, four 150 mm guns, and two stationary 40 mm anti-aircraft batteries. Until 1989, ready-to-fire guns were hidden in positions underground, which could shoot all the way to Lolland, and until 1993 the naval station was the place of service for thousands of young Danish men.
The museum was opened in June 1997, and is designated as a monument of ancient history with special cultural heritage in the Geopark Det Sydfynske Øhav (link to bottom page). Today, you can see buried gun positions, go inside the submarine "Springeren", board the minesweeper "Askø", stand face to face with the legendary MIG-23 fighter jet, and view a complete section of the Berlin Wall. Soon you can also experience the Danish-made submarine "Skækhuggeren", which is being handed over by the National Museum. The submarine patrolled the Baltic Sea while Langeland Fort and Stevns Fort formed the physical front on Danish soil.
During the summer and autumn school holidays, the Fort invites you to children's days with special challenges and activities adapted to children. Here, they can sneak around the entire Fort area and carry out exciting recruit tasks, such as finding hidden military items to investigate whether they are from friends or enemies. To complete them, you have to be cunning, cunning, attentive, and not least cool. If you succeed, there is a small prize up for grabs in the museum shop. Also try your hand at the Frogman course at child height, and maybe come along for a ride in one of the military vehicles.
Bring your own food and drinks and enjoy them outside amidst the beautiful nature and playgrounds or under the half-roof. On selected days, the Fort's hot dog stand is also open, and in the Entrance Center you can buy coffee, ice cream, soft drinks, etc., as well as books and cool souvenirs.
